Being the victim of a crime can often cause you to have financial problems. Domestic violence victims and survivors often experience the effects of abuse long after the abusive relationship has ended.

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior where the abuser exerts power and control over their partner.

Behaviors in a domestic violence relationship can include physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse, and economic abuse. An abusive spouse will often take total control over the finances in a marriage, and not allow their partner to know financial information or make decisions about money.

Often, a domestic violence survivor spouse does not know when their abusive spouse owes a tax debt or has been dishonest when filing taxes.
